Position: Research and Development Internship Position at VoxCell BioInnovation Inc.
Start Date: November 1, 2020
End Date: April 1, 2021
Hours of work per week: 30
Intern rate of pay: $30/h

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP POSITION
VoxCell BioInnovation Inc. is a new biotechnology start up company located in Victoria, British Columbia. VoxCell’s focus is to produce a dual purpose 3D Printer/Bioprinter to be applied in the biomedical industry, including the drug development process. Our mission is to provide innovative solutions to the biomedical field through Canada’s first high resolution 3D printer/bioprinter.
VoxCell is looking for a high-motived intern with experience in 3D printing and bioprinting (knowledge in optics will be considered an asset). The intern will be working closely with VoxCell’s R&D team assisting on the development of complex 3D printed tissue models, using bioinks and cell cultures. In addition, the intern will help in the 3D printing and CAD design of parts for VoxCell’s bioprinter. Therefore, the intern will be integrated in our biotech research. The intern will be mentored by our CEO, Dr. Valente, and will be working directly with our Project Development Scientist Cameron Polglase.
VoxCell will provide the intern with the necessary training and support required for to succeed in the intern. The intern will receive training on 3D printing (16 h) by Dr. Valente (8 h) and Cameron Polglase (8 h) and optics and laser training by Dr. Konorov (Senior Staff Scientist, Laser and Optical Instrumentation at University of Victoria) (8 h).

Development of system testing protocols
Proposal of a testing method and how to perform it using VoxCells available equipment
Implementation of the testing protocol using 3D tissue models
3D CAD modelling of artificial tissue structures
Design of 3D tissue models using Fusion 360.
Ensuring the CAD work-space is organized and that parts/assemblies are easily identifiable
Characterization of 3D printed models using various equipment (SEM, confocal microscope)
Based upon the system testing protocol, characterizing the designed tissue models
Collecting data regarding laser beam parameters and print quality output
Material research and improvement of bioink properties for multiphoton 3D printing
Research into various bioinks and photo-initiators
Determination of cell viability in the proposed bioinks and their response to the 3D printing method
